The Britannia Arms 8017 Soquel Dr. Aptos, CA Saturday, August 14th Beginning at 12:00pm

Confirmed performers include: Benssis, Aivar, Ghosts at Sea, El Cuarto Verde, Funky Dosage and Vincent’s Ear.

If a good cause isn't enough motivation, for those of you looking for an "in" at Britannia Arms this would be a great way to make a good impression on the owner..

Pass the Open Mic

I was thinking about all the Open Mic nights around the Bay Area and the fact that technically a band could do an "Open Mic Tour"  - granted there would be no pay involved, but the booking would be easy (just show up!) and there might even be some new fans to convert. You could be playing SF tonight!

For those looking to get on stage, any stage, this is a viable option that could open some cool new doors. Here is my totally un-comprehensive, non-scientifically proven list of Bay Area Open Mics. Things change, so please confirm with venues before you drive all the way out for an open mic event.

Oops - just did some Google searching and what do you know - there is already a totally awesome, comprehensive Bay Area Open Mic Calendar... so check out my baby list, then go to the REAL site.

Monday:

Fast and Loose in the Good Times Today

Fast and Loose: Local Rock Photography Sometimes the best action isn’t in the mosh pit but, rather, in the photography pit. If you’re lucky enough to get close, or you’ve got a mighty camera that takes you where you want to go from a distance, onstage antics can be frozen for your reminiscing pleasures. But technology or not, it’s the eye of the maestro manning the camera that matters most. Check out the work of local rock photographers who’ve transferred the adrenaline and emotion of live concerts to film. A collection of images spanning local stars to musicians around the Bay Area, “Fast and Loose” exhibits the power of photography as a silent bridge between performer and audience. Catch the steely snaps of Peter Angelo Saporito, Vanessa Lucas, Cat Johnson, Brian Crabtree and Tim Cattera on the walls of the Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios throughout the month of July. Opening reception with tastes and tunes is Friday, July 2. Rock out with your zoom lens out. | LK INFO: 6-9 p.m. Friday, July 2. Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios, 118 Coral St., Santa Cruz. Friday, July 2 - Fast and Loose - A Selection of Local Rock 'n' Roll Photography

[slideshow] Friday, July 2 Artist Reception 6-9 PM 118 Coral Street

Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios (118 Coral Street) will host a reception from 6-9 PM for our latest show entitled “Fast and Loose – A Selection of Local Rock N’ Roll Photography.”

The show features the work of local photographers Tim Cattera, Brian Crabtree, Cat Johnson, Vanessa Lucas and Peter Saporito. Each photographer will display some of their favorite band shots from Santa Cruz and Bay Area venues throughout the years.

These diverse collections of images, captured in the moment, document the raw energy and controlled chaos which is always part of the shows. The lens is sometimes directed towards the stage, individual band members or on the audience and their interaction with the experience. If this show does not inspire you to go out and experience live music, I’m not sure anything will.

About the artists:

Tim Cattera Starting out with success in surf photography, including his work published in Surfer Magazine, Tim evolved into stills, family portraits, fashion and live music. You can find him locally, anywhere from on top of a bar at the Crepe Place trying to get the perfect angle on the drummer, to roaming the wharf shooting hot rods in the sun. http://www.timcattera.com/

Brain Crabtree Brian was just another college kid with a camera until he began an internship with Santa Cruz based Your Music Magazine. Since then, Brian has become the magazine’s main photographer capturing shows and experiencing the Santa Cruz underground music scene on a near daily basis.  http://yourmusicmagazine.com/photos.html

Cat Johnson A renaissance woman, Cat is a blogger, freelance writer, web and graphic design buff, long-time record store nerd/employee and musician, as well as a photography enthusiast. Behind the counter at Streetlight Records Cat is uniquely positioned to capture candid moments from the mundane to the insane.   http://houseofcat.net/

Vanessa Lucas With a fascination for the absurd and a ravenous hunger to see the truth behind "The Scenes" Vanessa Lucas entertains and provokes the visual world of the underground. Her work strives to capture the souls of all those who dare to go outside the norm. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Just-For-Thee-Taste-Photography/199324136279

Peter Saporito The past 15 years Peter has been looking through a lens to capture light. Light that comes in countless forms – live music, a secluded ferris wheel, a random bathroom or a portrait of a friend. Peter has been voted Best Photographer and Best Visual Artist in both Santa Cruz Weekly and Good Times. http://www.peterangelosaporito.com

Good Times Santa Cruz - ART SEEN

Stacie Willoughby ART SEEN Just like music makes the body dance, the presence of music in the dancing lines of Stacie Willoughby’s fluidly ebullient drawings is undeniable. A local artist, Willoughby’s silent outbursts of color don the streets, venues and shops of Santa Cruz via concert posters that transfer the atmospheric elements of songs onto paper. Psychedelic, bold, wispy, whispery, entangling. Such are the types of descriptive words one could apply to the work of an artist whose muse is often the sound being advertised. While her illustrations (made by pens, pencils, markers and more) are usually catching eyes sporadically around town, Willoughby will be exhibiting a collection of her work in one spot, Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios, for the month of June. An opening reception with drinks, nibbles and, of course, live music will honor the artist and her striking images next Friday, June 4. You’ve seen the art, now meet the artist. | Linda Koffman INFO: 6-9 p.m. Friday, June 4. Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios, 118 Coral St., Santa Cruz. Free. 425-7277.

First Friday / Noise Before the Show / Poster Art of Stacie Willoughby

First Friday - Friday, June 4
6:00pm - 9:00pm
Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios
118 Coral St, off River
Featuring the poster art of Stacie Willoughby.

About the Artist:
Excerpted from an amazing article on Stacie by Cat Johnson (found here - Eerily Engaging: The Work of Stacie Willoughby).
If you’ve been in or around the Bay Area music scene anytime in the last decade, you have almost certainly encountered Willoughby’s work. She has produced a steady stream of posters for shows ranging from small, last-minute house shows to huge, multi-day festivals in the forest, and everything in between. The scope of her portfolio is mind-boggling; page after page of posters, announcing performances by some of the most interesting and cred-heavy artists around, including Will Oldham, Fleet Foxes, Stephen Malkmus, Bert Jansch, Sleepy Sun, Mudhoney, Black Francis and Animal Collective; and that’s just scratching the surface. Willoughby is, quite literally, identifying, furthering and documenting an era of music.

Beeets.com Launch Party - Thursday, May 13

Santa Cruz,'s own Beeets.com, the only events search engine powered by your interests, will launch Thursday during a free show at The Crepe Place .

Featuring local bands Wooster (Santa Cruz) and Yung Mars (San Francisco), the show will be free to the public and include raffle prizes such as iPods and T-shirts. The launch party will coincide with the release of The Crepe Place’s new web site, built by Lyon Bros. Enterprises and powered by Beeets.com events.

Beeets.com is a new service that allows people to post, search and share events based completely on their interests. Events are “tagged” with descriptive words, allowing people to quickly filter through the local events listing by clicking on one or more interests. This unique interest search makes it easy for people to post and find events that wouldn’t fit into the few pre-defined categories on other events sites. Beeets.com is an ad-free experience that aims to get people off the web, into their communities and having fun with their lives.

Beeets enables local groups, including music venues, sports teams and community organizations, to have a central place to post and manage their events, not only on the Beeets website, but on their own websites as well. Using the simple drop-in Beeets Widget, organizations can pull their events listing from Beeets.com into their own sites. The Beeets Widget makes it easy to maintain an up-to-date list of events on any web site, and also allows people with similar interests to easily find these events on Beeets.com.

First Friday / Form and Flow / May 7 6-9 PM

With so many musician/artists in our midst it was only a matter of time before our once bare walls got a little decorating. Over the past week a few of Santa Cruz's finest have graced our walls/shelves with their work (and more to come before next month).

Friday, May 7 we are participating in the "First Friday" art tour and hosting a reception (aka party) from 6-9 PM. Music will be provided by Moon Cadillac.

FORM AND FLOW WORKS IN METAL, WATERCOLOR AND OIL BY CJ FLORES, PEPE TIGER AND MIKE WELSH.    FLORES For the past thirteen years local artist and performer CJ Flores has been sculpting lights, mirrors and outdoor art out of metal and wood. His signature lights cut out of recycled olive oil tins can be found in sacred spaces throughout the county. Constantly inspired by the female form, many of his pieces depict women’s innate sexuality and power. Also a tattoo artist, his latest series is inspired by flash and the rockabilly subculture.   TIGER Santa Cruz native, Pepe NUnez, aka Pepe Tiger paints your grandmother’s caricature at the Boardwalk by day, and your wildest dreams by night. Taking inspiration from the streets, his paintings depict modern interpretations of everything from the girl next door to the Virgin Mary. www.myspace.com/pepetiger     WELSH Describing his art as “collaborative interactive” Mike Welsh embraces the impermanence of life itself.  His latest collection of skim board art was created with ink/oil on wood and then tested for function in the surf. The waves and sand add a dimension of texture to pieces that are not just decorative.   Please join us for our First Friday debut on Friday, May 7 from 6-9 pm at Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios, 118 Coral Street (in Harvey West next to Polar Radiator), as we toast these fine local artists. Music & libations will be provided.

Young Performers Showcase

Santa Cruz Rehearsal Studios has donated some rehearsal time to this awesome organization working to support local music programs in the Santa Cruz City Schools. We are really excited about this event and hope to see you there! If you have a cause you would like us to lend support to. Please email and let us know.

Saturday, March 20 @ 7:30: A benefit concert to raise money to support music programs in the Santa Cruz City Schools, the Young Performers Showcase is a review of talented, young local performing artists, ages 13-28.

Performers include the rising star rock trio Almost Chaos, singer and dancers Camille Castro and her sisters, Musicscool All-Stars featuring James Durbin, D.S.R. and Co. Dance Crew, Harbor High Cheerleaders, jugglers Noah and Robin, singer/songwriter Tess Dunn, Dancenter Hip Hop Crew, singer Alysha Antonino, Guest MC Sven Davis and house band, ROMP, from Planet Cruz Comedy Hour and a special performance by Grammy Award nominee Tammi Brown.

This program was developed by a small group of Santa Cruz business professionals concerned about the steadily declining budget for music programs in the schools. They decided to "put on a show" as a fundraiser to supplement state and local funding sources. Studies confirm that children who are exposed to music and music performance in schools show many benefits including increased academic performance, self-esteem, concentration, self-expression and connectedness to school.

Please join us for an enjoyable evening of family entertainment and help support music in the schools. There will also be a "50/50" Raffle and Silent Auction of valuable prizes.

Show time: 7:30 pm Tickets: $8 for Students; $20 for Adults; $40 for Gold Circle seating and are available at Streetlight Records, Rio Theatre Box Office (night of show only) and Ticketweb
